- Team 573 - Mech Warriors - Website
FIRST Robotics Competition 2010 Challenge "BREAKAWAY"
Website
One of the FIRST awards given each year during the competition is a Website Award.
The Team 573 Mech Warriors website, team573.com, is designed and maintained by a student team member. In order to allow most browsers new and old to access the content on team 573's website, the layout and elements found throughout were coded for older browsers . This was done in consideration of the many schools and people that have older computers.
This past year IE8 was introduced and gave us a challenge we didn't expect. The js scripted drop down menus we had been creating for previous website builds was sluggish and finicky in an IE8 browser on some computers. Even after we slowed down the animation problems on some computers remained. So we had to decide whether to sacrifice the js scripting and opt for static links with fancy casading style scripts or frustrate the visitors to our site that may have the computers with IE8 .js quirks.
Our final decision to use static links was made after reviewing the raw logs of our website traffic over the years. We expected to see most of the website traffic occuring during the FRC seasons. During this review we discovered that our website recieved thousands of visitors throughout the years for searches not related to FRC. Most of these searches were from people looking for information regarding non FRC related topics such as information about a popular video game. Many other visitors came from link overs from a website that contains a good luck to team 573 banner. That website is not related to robotics but it attracts many young people. So our decision was to make sure that non FRC visitors, people unfamilar with FIRST, would take the time to investigate our team website with ease and become interested in getting involved in FIRST.
The website html and css templates were originally hand coded using microsoft note pad. After W3C compliance tests were completed the code was used for the website. The code was designed and layed out so that it could easily be used in most website development softwares if copied and saved as a template.
The content found within the pages of the Team 573 website was written by different student members of the Mech Warriors Team 573.
